Sydney has no shortage of video production companies, from solo freelancers to large agencies. Choosing the right one makes a big difference to the quality of the result, how smooth the process is and whether the video achieves what you need. These ten questions will help you compare your options.
1. Can I see work similar to my project?
A great music video doesn’t prove someone can produce a clear corporate explainer. Ask for examples in your industry or format, and watch them all the way through. Look at the storytelling, audio quality and pacing, not just the pretty shots.
2. What’s your process from brief to delivery?
A professional company can explain its process clearly: discovery, pre-production, shoot, edit, revisions, delivery. Vague answers often lead to vague results.
3. Who will actually work on my project?
Will the people who pitched be the ones directing and editing? Is the crew in-house or subcontracted? Both can work, but you should know who’s responsible.
4. How do you help with the message, not just the filming?
The best partners ask about your goals, audience and customers before they talk about cameras. If a company goes straight to equipment, they may be thinking about the shoot, not the result.
5. What exactly is included in the quote?
Check shoot hours, crew, equipment, drone, pre-production, music licensing, captions, revision rounds and deliverables. See our guide to video production costs in Sydney for what drives pricing.
6. What deliverables will I receive?
Will you get vertical versions for social, shorter cutdowns, caption files and stills? Planning these up front is much cheaper than asking afterwards.
7. How many revisions are included, and what happens after that?
Two rounds of changes is common. Understand how feedback works and what extra rounds cost.
8. Who owns the footage and what are the usage rights?
Clarify whether you can use the video anywhere and for any length of time, including paid advertising, and whether you can get the raw footage. Talent and music licences can limit usage, so ask.
9. Are you insured and licensed?
Professional companies carry public liability insurance, which many venues and construction sites require. For aerial footage, the drone operator must be licensed by CASA and follow airspace rules.
10. What do your clients say?
Read Google reviews and ask for references. Look for comments about communication, reliability and deadlines, not just the final video.
Red flags to watch for
- No clear process or written scope
- Unwilling to show complete videos or recent work
- Prices that seem too good to be true (check what’s missing)
- No questions about your goals or audience
- Unclear ownership or usage terms
Freelancer, production company or agency?
Freelancers can be great value for simple, well-defined jobs. Production companies offer a full team, a proven process and capacity for bigger or ongoing projects. Advertising agencies handle broader campaigns but usually subcontract production, at a higher overall cost. Choose based on the scale and importance of the project.
FAQs
How far in advance should I book?
Two to four weeks is typical for corporate and social content. Allow longer for commercials, events in busy seasons and complex productions.
Should I choose a local Sydney company?
For Sydney shoots, a local team knows the locations, permits and logistics, and doesn’t charge for travel. It also makes ongoing content easier to produce.
What should I prepare before contacting a company?
Your goal, audience, budget range, deadline, where the video will be used and examples of videos you like.
